Distal Footprints and Characteristics of Porphyry Deposits in Arizona “SOLD OUT”

Join MDRU for a 8-day field trip short course on November 1 to 8, 2024

LARAMIDE PORPHYRY SYSTEMS

This 8-day field trip will introduce participants to the Late Cretaceous to Paleogene Laramide porphyry copper province in Arizona. We have partnered with industry members in Arizona to provide comprehensive overviews of at least six porphyry systems in the district. In particular, we will evaluate intrusive, alteration, structural, and tectonic characteristics of each system and discuss methods for exploration. We expect a range of participants with different expertise and will make time for discussion and review.

ABOUT THE REGION

The course takes place in east-central Arizona in the Laramide copper porphyry province, one of the world’s premier sources of copper. These deposits include examples of calc-alkalic Cu-Mo and Cu porphyry deposits that represent an important part of Arizona’s copper endowment.  Participants also learn about the regional geology to provide context for the Late Cretaceous to Paleogene Laramide orogenic event and subsequent Cenezoic structural overprint related to the Basin and Range province. The region is well-exposed; our visits will include open pits, roadcuts, and surrounding outcrops.

MINE/PROJECT VISITS AND EXERCISES

We will visit a different porphyry system each day of the trip, including but not limited to: Copper Cities (BHP), Copper Creek (Faraday Copper), Ray (ASARCO), Resolution (Resolution Copper/Rio Tinto), Santa Cruz (Ivanhoe Electric), San Manuel-Kalamazoo (BHP), U.S. Highway 60 Mapping Exercise

Participants in this course will be a mix of industry and MDRU graduate students and researchers. All participants should be comfortable in open pits and on uneven terrain.
